For the last decade the South African government along with the mining sector has undertaken to change from being a predominantly primary exporter to becoming a world exporter of processed minerals. The South African state is spearheading a beneficiation drive to ensure that raw materials, such as metals and minerals, are processed locally rather than forfeiting employment and extra local beneficiation through legislation. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act of 2002, (Act 28 of 2002) “MPRDA” includes provisions that will ensure that the Minster of Mineral Resources promotes the establishment of secondary and tertiary mineral-based industries, aimed at adding maximum value to mineral raw materials, where economically justifiable.
Speaking at the opening of the Avalloy facility, Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Elizabeth Thabethe said that ‘the project was a “major step” in government’s beneficiation programme, which seeks to ensure value-add to the country’s mineral wealth’.
Avalloy is well positioned to capitalise on this initiative by the South African Government in that it intents on using local minerals, beneficiating them and exporting the final product.
